Role: Azure Cloud Engineer – VDOT / E-ZPass Location: Remote Interview: WebCam Interview Only Job Type: Contract Job Overview We are seeking an experienced Azure Cloud Engineer to join the Engineering & Operations team supporting Virginia's tolling environment. This position combines Azure cloud engineering, infrastructure administration, application support, monitoring, troubleshooting, security, and production operations. The ideal candidate must have strong hands-on Azure experience and, most importantly, at least 3 years of experience supporting VDOT / E-ZPass Virginia tolling applications, infrastructure, and cloud workloads.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain and implement cloud resources within the VDOT Tolling Azure environment. Support Azure infrastructure, applications, networking, IAM, security, and cloud governance. Monitor Azure services and production workloads using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights. Troubleshoot connectivity, access, security, application performance, and service degradation issues. Perform production incident triage, root-cause analysis, and remediation. Support tolling transaction flows, roadway/sensor data ingestion, financial transactions, and reporting systems. Administer Entra ID, SSO, RBAC, access reviews, and least-privilege controls. Manage Azure Key Vault, certificates, passwords, and secure credentials. Implement and support Rubrik backup and recovery for Azure IaaS/PaaS environments. Administer and troubleshoot Secret Server privileged access vaults, including credential rotation and Azure integrations. Support Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). Support Microsoft Office 365 and Power Apps. Develop automation and administrative scripts using PowerShell and/or Python. Maintain infrastructure, network, and system topology documentation. Support highly available and fault-tolerant Azure solutions. Participate in operational support, maintenance activities, change requests, and after-hours activities when required. Follow PCI and other applicable security/compliance requirements. Analyze cloud utilization and assist with cost optimization and governance. Required Qualifications 3+ years of Microsoft Azure administration/engineering experience. 3+ years of hands-on experience supporting VDOT / E-ZPass Virginia tolling applications, infrastructure, and cloud workloads. 5+ years of experience working in Microsoft Windows environments. 2+ years of server infrastructure, networking, protocols, firewalls, certificates, and load balancers. 2+ years of networking, server administration, databases, and cloud environments. 2+ years of hands-on Rubrik backup and recovery experience for Azure IaaS/PaaS. 2+ years of PowerShell and/or Python scripting. 2+ years of Secret Server privileged access vault administration. Experience with Entra ID / Azure AD and Single Sign-On (SSO). Experience with Office 365 and Power Apps. Experience with PCI or similar compliance frameworks. Ability to troubleshoot complex production environments and perform root-cause analysis. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Azure certification such as AZ-104 or AZ-305. Azure Virtual Desktop experience. Terraform or other Infrastructure as Code tools. Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Git, or TFS. Docker/Kubernetes. Experience with enterprise cloud governance. Cloud cost optimization experience. Key Vault and certificate management. Important Requirement: Candidates must have 3+ years of hands-on VDOT / E-ZPass Virginia tolling experience. This is a critical requirement for the position. Background Check The selected candidate will be required to complete a fingerprint-based background check. Candidates are also expected to maintain current knowledge of VDOT technologies through continued education.
