Communications Fellowship
Remote · Unpaid, volunteer, mentored, project-based fellowship · Flexible, 3-month fellowship What if there was a museum of microbes, a hyper-local app for climate engagement, a community for safe AI practices? Tinkerism is an early-stage non-profit exploring various community-based projects with the mission: Building things that matter, 15 minutes at a time. As AI lowers the barriers to building, human attention and judgment become even more important. Tinkerism is a platform where small, time-bounded contributions from people with relevant knowledge can be pooled to help make real-world impact. We are looking for a Communications Fellow who is excited by responsible AI, online communities, public-interest work, civic or science communication, and the challenge of making a new idea understandable to the general public. What you would doAt the start of the fellowship, we will agree on a learning goal and a small project suited to your interests. You will receive orientation, relevant learning resources, and feedback through regular check-ins. The fellowship concludes with a portfolio-ready artifact and a short reflection on what you learned. This is a strategic, flexible, mentored, project-based fellowship position. Depending on your interests and availability, you may: Provide feedback on public-facing content, contributor calls, newsletters, or launch materials Review and improve early social-media messaging, tone, and positioning Help translate the Tinkerism mission into clear, human, credible posts Advise on which channels and communities are genuinely worth engaging Suggest lightweight content formats, editorial rhythms, and community-engagement practices Help define what responsible, transparent “build in public” communication should look like Identify messaging that risks sounding like generic AI hype, unsupported claims, or “AI slop” Optionally contribute a small number of posts, drafts, or content critiques as part of a mutually agreed project What you would gainMentorship and periodic feedback from advisors with broad experience in technology, product development, and marketing. A structured opportunity to shape the early voice and community strategy of a mission-driven initiative Exposure to early-stage strategy, ethical AI positioning, community design, and public-interest product development A portfolio-ready strategic brief, messaging framework, content sample, or documented project outcome A contribution acknowledgment or reference based on the work actually completed Who may be a fitYou may be early-career, mid-career, between roles, a student, a communications professional, a community builder, or someone with relevant lived experience. You do not need a conventional marketing title. We especially welcome people with experience or strong interest in one or more of the following: Social-media strategy, editorial voice, community management, or digital storytelling AI, open knowledge, public-interest technology, civic innovation, science communication, or nonprofits Building trusted online communities or moderating thoughtful discourse Making complex ideas understandable without flattening or exaggerating them LinkedIn, X, Reddit, newsletters, community forums, or mission-led digital campaigns Time and formatRemote and asynchronous where possible Flexible participation; approximately 2–4 hours per week, flexibly agreed upon around your availability Three-month initial advisory term, with mutual check-ins No set schedule or requirement to perform ongoing operational work
