About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Data Engineer specializing in Market Data to join our Institutional Markets team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for architecting, building, and maintaining the core systems that generate, capture, normalize, and distribute real-time market data across Coinbase. You will lead a lean, high-impact team and own the infrastructure that forms the backbone of our trading platform’s data ecosystem. This position offers a unique opportunity to design market data infrastructure from the ground up, combining startup agility with Coinbase’s extensive reach. The ideal candidate will have a passion for low-latency systems, a strong background in backend engineering, and a collaborative mindset to partner with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative market data solutions. Qualifications 5+ years of experience in backend engineering with a focus on low-latency, high-throughput systems Hands-on experience with market data systems, including feed handlers, normalization, or distribution Proficiency in low-latency programming languages such as Java or C++ Experience with high-throughput messaging frameworks like Aeron, SBE, or similar Familiarity with venue/exchange connectivity and market data protocols such as FIX, ITCH/OUCH, multicast Proven track record of delivering features end-to-end and operating the systems built Strong understanding of observability, incident response, and system reliability Ability to write high-quality, well-tested code and maintain high standards within a lean team Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams including product managers and engineers Knowledge of responsible AI utilization to improve workflows and operational efficiency
Responsibilities
Design, build, and operate core market data components such as feed handlers, normalization pipelines, and distribution mechanisms Develop low-latency, high-throughput systems for real-time market data used by trading applications Enhance system reliability and performance through observability tools, monitoring, and incident management Write and maintain high-quality, thoroughly tested code to meet operational standards Collaborate with engineering, product, and other stakeholders to define and deliver market data capabilities Lead efforts to improve system scalability, latency, and robustness Participate in on-call rotations to ensure system stability and quick incident resolution Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and technical documentation
