Data Scientist - Fully Remote
About the Company
Junction is building the infrastructure layer for diagnostic healthcare, making patient data accessible, actionable, and automated across laboratories and devices. The company aims to use health data to generate deeper insights into human health and disease, helping make healthcare more personalized, proactive, and affordable. Backed by Creandum, Point Nine, 20VC, Y Combinator, and leading angel investors, Junction connects healthcare data sources and is scaling its platform to support better clinical and business outcomes.
About the Role
Junction is hiring its first Data Scientist to establish and lead the company's data science function. This role will shape how the organization measures outcomes, develops statistical models, evaluates AI-enabled products, and uses data to guide product, clinical, operational, and business decisions. Working closely with data, product engineering, and leadership teams, you will own high-priority research, modeling, experimentation, and evaluation initiatives across diagnostics and clinical workflows. This is a hands-on and strategic position that requires setting the analytical roadmap while ensuring models and insights translate into reliable, production-ready solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Lead research and modeling initiatives across diagnostics, clinical workflows, and AI-enabled product features. Establish rigorous frameworks for measurement, experimentation, and causal evaluation to distinguish meaningful signals from noise and support evidence-based decisions. Develop predictive models, segmentation approaches, risk assessments, routing logic, and other statistical systems that inform product and business strategy. Build the analytical foundation for customer-facing features, from model development and validation to ongoing performance tracking. Collaborate with engineering and data engineering teams to move models and analytical systems into production and ensure they remain reliable and useful in real-world workflows. Define evaluation methods, quality thresholds, monitoring practices, and performance reviews for data-driven and AI-enabled features. Communicate technical findings, methodological limitations, trade-offs, and actionable recommendations to technical teams, executives, and other stakeholders. Set the analytical and research roadmap to help Junction derive meaningful value from its healthcare data.
Required Qualifications
Strong track record of leading high-impact analytical projects that influence product, operational, or business decisions. Deep understanding of statistical inference, experimental design, observational analysis, and model evaluation. Strong Python and/or R programming skills and experience working with large, complex real-world datasets. Experience developing predictive or decision-support models in production or near-production environments. Experience partnering with engineering teams to move analytical work from prototypes into deployed systems. Ability to operate strategically while remaining hands-on with technical implementation and analysis. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to explain methods, findings, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences. Comfort working in a startup environment with ambiguity, limited structure, and significant ownership.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing, conducting, and publishing research studies. Familiarity with HIPAA, protected health information (PHI), or other clinical regulatory frameworks. Knowledge of modern data tools and production workflows across data warehouses, orchestration, and transformation layers. Experience developing and deploying evaluation frameworks for large language models (LLMs) or AI-powered features in customer-facing products. Experience working directly with healthcare, diagnostic, laboratory, wearable, or other clinical data. Practical experience applying causal inference methods such as difference-in-differences, propensity scoring, or instrumental variables.
Compensation and Benefits
Annual salary ranges from $180,000 to $220,000, plus equity. Compensation depends on location and experience level. Equity with an extended exercise period after two years of employment. Company and team offsites. Monthly learning and development budget of $150 for personal development and productivity. Monthly wellness budget of $100. Remote-first working arrangements with a $1,000 home office equipment budget. Coworking budget. 36 days of paid time off, including bank holidays. Premium healthcare coverage. Monthly employer contribution of 4% toward pension or 401(k). Annual blood test covered by the company. Enhanced parental, foster, and adoption leave. Location and Work Arrangement This is a fully remote position for candidates physically located in the GMT or EST time zones. Applicants must be based in one of these time zones to be eligible. Visa sponsorship is not currently available. Role Expectations This position focuses on establishing analytical methodology, developing models, and ensuring data-driven and AI-enabled features deliver reliable results in production. It is not a dashboard-focused reporting role or an ML platform engineering position. Candidates should be comfortable taking ownership of ambiguous problems and being accountable for the practical performance and impact of their work.
