Remote Position

Freelance Book Illustrator

🌍 Remote · United States 💼 Full-time

We are seeking an illustrator for a potential series of up to 50 colour spot illustrations for Eerie Escapes: 50 Scary Weekends in America, an adult travel book under contract with Countryman Press, an imprint distributed by W. W. Norton. The book is expected to be published in fall 2028, and we need the project delivered by April 2027. Each chapter will need one atmospheric illustration based on an eerie destination or regional subject, such as a lantern, vintage suitcase, lighthouse, historic building, or cryptid. We are considering either a soft watercolor or gouache style, or expressive line drawings with selective colour or light washes. Images should focus on a central subject with minimal background and a vintage, slightly eerie mood. Final artwork must be original, human-created, high-resolution, and suitable for professional print publication; generative AI cannot be used. We will provide visual references and confirm final print specifications with the publisher. Budget range: $5,000 – $10,000 USD Examples: This is an AI created example of the kind of images I’m looking for About the client I’m Angie Truman Smith, an author and the creator of Eerie Escapes, a travel project focused on haunted destinations, folklore, true crime, and unusual places across America. My forthcoming book, Eerie Escapes: 50 Scary Weekends in America, is under contract with Countryman Press, an imprint distributed by W. W. Norton, with publication expected in fall 2028. I am managing the illustration project independently and hope to find an artist who may be interested in collaborating on multiple illustrations while maintaining a consistent visual style throughout the book.
