Industrial Designer, Garden & Planters Over&Back | Remote, U.S.-based Reports to: VP, Commercial Growth & Product Development Individual contributor; no direct reports About Over&Back Over&Back is a family-owned business with more than 40 years of experience creating products for the home. Today, we are primarily a tabletop business, and we’re reconnecting with our roots in garden as we build the next chapter of our planter and garden assortment. We sell through major retailers and are focused on home improvement channels, while also growing our e-commerce business through Amazon and our own Shopify website. The Opportunity We’re looking for an Industrial Designer to help us build our garden business. You’ll work directly with our VP of Commercial Growth & Product Development, designing specific garden products for mass retailers as well as core assortments for our e-commerce channels. The initial focus will include ceramic, porcelain and fiberstone planters, with opportunities to explore materials such as plastic and resin as the business grows. You’ll contribute from early concepts through factory sampling and product presentation, collaborating with our creative team in Portugal and sourcing and factory partners in Asia. This is a hands-on, remote individual-contributor role with meaningful ownership and no direct reports. Candidates must be based in the United States. East Coast candidates are preferred to support collaboration within the same time zone. Over&Back’s home office is in Hauppauge, New York, with a showroom in New York City. Travel is light, typically a couple of trips per year for design trade shows and occasional customer on-site visits. Some trade-show travel may be international. What You’ll Do Translate category strategy, customer briefs and consumer insights into distinctive, commercially relevant product concepts. Design garden and planter products for mass-retail programs and develop core assortments for e-commerce. Create coordinated collections across sizes, materials, colors and finishes for indoor and outdoor use. Develop sketches, 3D models, renderings, technical drawings and specifications that clearly communicate design intent. Consider practical requirements such as grower-pot compatibility, drainage, surface protection, stability and durability. Balance design quality with target costs, manufacturing capabilities and channel requirements. Partner with suppliers to assess feasibility, develop samples and resolve construction, proportion, finish and quality issues. Review samples and provide clear, organized feedback through development rounds. Research trends, materials, finishes and competitive assortments to identify product opportunities. Create product visuals, collection boards and presentation materials for internal reviews, customer meetings and online channels. Keep specifications, sample feedback and development timelines organized across projects. Attend select design trade shows and occasional customer on-site visits. What You’ll Bring A portfolio demonstrating strong industrial or product design skills, from concept through finished product. Experience designing consumer products for retail, ideally in planters, garden, home décor, tabletop or a related category. A strong eye for proportion, form, color, texture and coordinated collection development. Proficiency in 3D CAD, rendering and Adobe Creative Suite, with the ability to create clear technical documentation. Experience working with manufacturers and refining designs through sampling and production. An understanding of how materials, manufacturing processes and cost shape design decisions. Strong communication, organization and project-management skills. The initiative to work independently and help build processes as the business develops. A degree in industrial design, product design or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. Experience with ceramics, molded materials, overseas factories or private-label retail development is especially valuable.
