Lead Software Engineer - AWS - Healthcare (HL7/FHIR/UM/CM/Payer/Provider)
Lead Software Engineer Remote Full Time We’re looking for a Lead Software Engineer to set the technical direction for our core platform while remaining deeply hands-on in development. This is a senior individual contributor role with no direct reports, ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, driving architectural decisions, and mentoring engineers through influence rather than formal management. In this role, you will design and build scalable backend services and integrations, own architecture decisions for your domain, and contribute a significant share of production code. You will review code, provide technical guidance to engineering teams, and collaborate closely with Product, QA, and Clinical stakeholders to transform ambiguous requirements into reliable, maintainable solutions. When the team encounters difficult problems such as performance bottlenecks, large-scale data migrations, system reliability issues, or production incidents, you will be the technical leader others rely on to drive resolution and establish long-term solutions.
Responsibilities
Define and drive technical architecture for core platform services and integrations. Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems. Write high-quality, maintainable, and well-tested production code. Lead technical discussions and architecture reviews across multiple teams. Review code and mentor engineers on design patterns, coding standards, and best practices. Collaborate with Product, QA, Operations, and Clinical teams to deliver business-critical functionality. Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues, performance challenges, and system reliability concerns. Guide technical decision-making by clearly communicating tradeoffs, risks, and recommendations. Ensure systems are scalable, secure, and maintainable over the long term. Qualifications 10+ years of professional software engineering experience. Strong expertise in modern backend technologies such as Java, C#, .NET, or similar languages. Extensive experience designing and building APIs, integrations, and distributed systems. Strong knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP. Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle. Demonstrated success leading technical initiatives that span multiple teams and systems. Proven track record of delivering scalable, highly available, and reliable software platforms. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the healthcare industry. Familiarity with healthcare standards and regulations, including HIPAA, HL7, and FHIR. Experience working with healthcare workflows such as: Utilization Management Care Management Claims Processing Provider and Payer Systems Clinical Data Interoperability Experience supporting mission-critical production environments and incident response processes.
