Long-Term Legal Transcriber & Scopist for State Contract – JAVS Software Required
We are seeking experienced, detail-oriented Independent 1099 Legal Transcribers and Scopists to join our team for an upcoming multi-year government contract with the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission. This is high-volume, steady work. The agency processes an estimated 1,500 to 2,500 pages per month, with files ranging from 200 to 300 pages each. Turnaround times are strict: all completed transcripts must be delivered within 2 weeks of file assignment. Because this contract is for official evidentiary records, we require absolute precision. We maintain a strict 98% to 99%+ human-verified accuracy threshold. Key Labor Roles Needed: 1. Legal Transcriber: Responsible for listening to 4-track audio files and typing out the initial, strict verbatim draft (including all filler words like "um," "uh," repeated words, sighs, and pauses). 2. Scopist / Legal Proofreader: Responsible for auditing the initial draft against the audio, correcting formatting to match the agency’s strict style guide, and performing final legal terminology verification. Note: If you have extensive experience, you may apply to handle the process from A-to-Z (transcribing and self-proofing). Mandatory Technical & Skill Requirements:
- Operating System: Must use a native Windows PC (Mac/OSX is not compatible with the required state software).
- Proprietary Software: Must be able to download and operate JAVS Viewer 8 (v8.39.93 or later) to process multi-track audio and view hearing clerk notes.
- Typing Speed: Minimum 75+ WPM with high accuracy.
- Experience: Proven past performance transcribing multi-speaker legal hearings, depositions, or court proceedings.
- Data Security: Must agree to sign a strict Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and work only over secure, private networks (no public Wi-Fi).
Compensation & Terms:
- Rates: $1.50 – $1.75 per page for initial transcription; $0.50 – $0.75 per page for scoping/proofing. (Combined A-to-Z rate: $2.00 – $2.50 per page based on experience).
- Contingency: Onboarding is fully contingent upon our agency being awarded Virginia Contract #191100526, with project estimated to begin January 2027.
