About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join our Identity Verification team within the Platform group. In this pivotal role, you will own and develop the machine learning systems responsible for verifying identities, ensuring the legitimacy of individuals, documents, and capture sessions. Your work directly impacts the security and integrity of millions of Coinbase accounts, as every signup, account recovery, and high-risk transaction depends on your models. You will lead the technical strategy for end-to-end identity verification ML systems, from architecture design to production enforcement, safeguarding our platform against fraud and synthetic identities. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence the future of digital identity verification at a global scale, working with cutting-edge ML techniques and a talented team of engineers and stakeholders across the company. Qualifications 8+ years of experience deploying production machine learning systems at scale Proven technical leadership in designing and owning cross-team ML architecture Deep domain expertise in identity verification, biometrics, or account integrity Hands-on experience with computer vision, biometrics, GNNs, sequence models, or NLP/LLMs Expert-level proficiency in Python, with extensive experience in TensorFlow or PyTorch for model training, evaluation, and deployment Strong understanding of KYC/AML requirements, fraud trends, and translating them into ML strategies Experience in benchmarking external models, designing routing logic, and building evaluation layers for ML systems Ability to mentor and lead engineering teams, collaborating effectively with ML Platform and Risk ML teams Experience with generative AI applications, ensuring responsible use with human oversight
Responsibilities
Own and maintain the full IDV ML stack, including models for document authenticity, face matching, liveness detection, presentation-attack detection, and deepfake detection Develop identity-graph systems utilizing GNNs to detect synthetic-identity rings and coordinated fraud at onboarding Create behavioral and device-intelligence models for anomaly detection, bot-vs-human classification, and risk scoring in real-time Drive vendor ML strategy by benchmarking external models, designing dynamic routing logic across providers and regions, and building evaluation infrastructure Lead and mentor senior and mid-level engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative team environment Partner with cross-functional teams including ML Platform, Risk, Product, Compliance, and Security to align system design and strategy Translate fraud trends and compliance requirements into actionable ML roadmaps and technical solutions Ensure production ML systems are reliable, scalable, and aligned with security standards
