About The Role We are seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join the CEE Intelligence (CEEI) team, the machine learning and intelligence layer powering Coinbase’s customer engagement ecosystem. This team builds customer intelligence, evaluation systems, routing and classification models, safety guardrails, and decision-making capabilities that enhance the Help Center, chat, voice, agent tooling, and other customer support platforms. As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of production ML systems, influence technical strategy, and collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to improve customer experience, automation, safety, and resolution quality. Qualifications 8+ years of experience in machine learning and software engineering with a proven track record of building, scaling, and maintaining production ML systems, data platforms, or analytical services. Hands-on expertise with large language models (LLMs), deep learning, graph neural networks, gradient-boosted trees, or regression techniques. Strong knowledge of natural language processing (NLP), information retrieval, data mining, or advanced statistics. Proficient in Python with the ability to write maintainable, highly tested production code for ML services. Experience mentoring engineers and elevating technical standards across teams or organizations. Ability to lead design reviews focusing on security, responsible AI, model quality, and architectural integrity. Demonstrated use of generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
Responsibilities
Own the end-to-end design and delivery of production ML systems addressing complex customer experience challenges. Apply advanced ML techniques including LLMs, deep learning, graph neural networks, and classical methods to develop scalable intelligence capabilities. Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps and translate vision into quarterly execution plans with measurable outcomes. Lead high-impact machine learning projects from architecture through production, managing priorities, risks, and dependencies effectively. Develop scalable, secure, and reliable ML systems, evaluation pipelines, and data workflows using high-quality Python code. Mentor engineers and establish team-wide standards for design, testing, observability, and operational excellence. Drive design reviews that enhance security, responsible AI practices, model quality, and architectural integrity, improving system reliability, scalability, and latency.
