Part-Time Construction Estimator – Landscape & Residential (Orange County / LA)

Stout Design Build is a licensed design-build contractor (C27, C53) based in Huntington Beach CA. We design and build high-end landscapes, hardscapes, residential remodels and select commercial tenant improvements. We handle each project from concept through construction, and our estimates are a key part of how we win and run work. Job Summary We’re looking for an experienced, field-savvy estimator to take ownership of our estimating process. You’ll prepare accurate, clearly written estimates from plans and site visits. Just as important, you’ll help us build a repeatable system so estimates are consistent, fast and easy for clients to understand. That system includes a cost catalog, assemblies, standard scope language and templates. This is a hands-on role for someone who knows how things actually get built, not just how to count them.
Responsibilities
Perform takeoffs from landscape, hardscape, architectural and civil drawings to determine material, labor, equipment and subcontractor costs. Build detailed estimates in Buildertrend using our labor/material structure and markup standards. Write clear line-item descriptions covering location on the property and the work being done, so clients can understand the estimate without the plans. Develop and maintain a cost catalog and standard assemblies, for example walls per LF, paving per SF with base, irrigation and drainage, and planting by container size. Request, review and level subcontractor and supplier bids, and confirm that scopes are complete and comparable. Conduct site visits to verify existing conditions, quantities, access and constructability. Revise estimates as designs change, and support value-engineering discussions with options and allowances. Coordinate with our design team and project managers to keep estimates aligned with plans and schedules. Track estimate status and turnaround so bids go out on time. Qualifications 3+ years of estimating experience in landscape, hardscape and/or residential construction in Southern California. Buildertrend experience required. Strong field knowledge of correct construction assemblies, including bases and compaction, drainage, waterproofing, retaining walls, concrete, pavers, irrigation and planting. Proficiency with takeoff software (Bluebeam, PlanSwift, STACK or similar) and strong Excel skills. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, details and specifications accurately. Knowledge of current SoCal material and labor pricing. Organized and able to manage multiple estimates at once while meeting deadlines. Clear written communication. Your estimates are client-facing. Willingness to do site visits throughout Orange County and Los Angeles. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Nice to Have
Experience building cost databases, assemblies or estimating templates. Background as a field superintendent, foreman or project manager. Pool, outdoor kitchen, structural hardscape or hillside experience.
