Recruiter / HR Coordinator
Full-time, 12-month · Remote (Ohio) Reimagine school. Support students. Change lives. ChallengeU is a fully online high school for students who have fallen behind or disconnected from traditional education. Through flexibility, compassion, and personalized support, we help them reclaim their path to graduation. ChallengeU is a young school growing fast, and you'll be our dedicated recruiter and HR coordinator for now. You'll lead our hiring for teaching, student support, and administrative roles, and take care of the day-to-day HR work that comes with it: onboarding, benefits enrollment, and employee records. Hiring peaks before the school year begins, so the mix of recruiting and HR coordination shifts across the year. It's a strong fit if you love recruiting and want to grow into a broader HR role as the school, and its HR team, grow. We work with external HR consultants on more complex HR matters, and you'll build your HR skills alongside them.
What You'll Do
Recruiting and hiring
- Partner with hiring managers to understand open roles, timelines, and what a strong candidate looks like.
- Write and maintain job descriptions, and post job ads on job boards, social media, and education-focused channels, keeping a consistent tone across all our postings.
- Source candidates directly, including passive candidates and licensed educators.
- Promote our job postings on recruitment platforms, and recommend how much to spend and where, based on the size and quality of the candidate pool, including when more budget is needed.
- Screen applications and run phone screens, keeping the applicant tracker accurate and up to date.
- Coordinate interviews from start to finish: scheduling, rubrics, panel feedback, and keeping candidates and interviewers informed.
- Manage reference and background checks, including Ohio educator licensure verification, and prepare offer letters and employment contracts from our templates for leadership approval.
- Keep leadership informed of recruiting progress, including open positions and candidates at each stage of the pipeline, and flag early when a pipeline is running dry.
- Over time, propose projects that strengthen our employer brand, such as improving our careers page and relationships with colleges, licensure programs, and community partners, to grow the candidate pipeline.
HR coordination
- Run new hire onboarding: paperwork, HRIS setup, I-9s, and coordinating equipment and system access.
- Check in with new hires during their first weeks and through probation to see how they're doing and how they're settling in, and coordinate probation confirmations with managers.
- Handle benefits enrollment for new hires and during open enrollment.
- Handle the administrative side of departures: paperwork, system updates, equipment return, final pay coordination, and exit interviews.
- Keep employee records and personnel files accurate, organized, and compliant in the HRIS (status, pay, and personal changes), track educator license expirations and renewals, and keep HR templates up to date.
- Coordinate with our payroll provider to keep information on new and current employees up to date.
- Be the first point of contact for employees' routine questions about HR policies and benefits.
Other duties
- Any other HR-related duties assigned by the General Manager of our management company (which provides shared services to the school) or the Chief of School Operations.

- Comfort managing many open roles and candidates at once during hiring peaks, without dropping details.
- Clear, friendly written and verbal communication.

- Good judgment about what you can handle and what to bring to management.
- Discretion when handling confidential information, such as pay, background checks, and personnel files.
- Comfort working remotely and independently, as a team of one.
