[Remote] Freelance Frontend Developer

Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Sans Serif is a Northern California-based creative agency seeking a mid-level freelance frontend developer for remote contract work. The role focuses on translating designs into responsive frontend code, developing and maintaining custom WordPress sites and HTML emails, troubleshooting issues, and supporting testing, maintenance, and project delivery.

Responsibilities

• Translate Figma designs into responsive, semantic, accessible frontend code
• Build new frontend features on existing websites
• Build and maintain custom WordPress themes/functionality to agreed specs
• Build individual HTML emails from existing templates, with occasional template-building work from design files as needed
• Check finished work against design files for visual and interaction accuracy, and support general testing/QA across projects
• Troubleshoot and resolve frontend and CMS-level bugs
• Perform ongoing updates and maintenance for CMS-driven sites
• Communicate clearly on task status and any blockers
• Collaborate with our technical lead on scope and approach, and deliver work to agreed specs
• Provide regular updates on task/project status
• Deliver code that aligns with our coding standards, so it's easy for teammates to read, maintain, and build on
• Work within defined hours/budgets, with clear time tracking and timely invoicing

Skills

• Proficient in semantic HTML5, CSS3/SCSS/Tailwind, and JavaScript, with responsive, mobile-first development and working knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards
• Strong attention to visual detail when translating designs to code
• Understanding of web performance and cross-browser compatibility
• Comfortable with custom WordPress theme development, including custom Gutenberg blocks built with ACF Blocks, and working knowledge of PHP
• Experience building and troubleshooting HTML emails across clients, including dark mode and full Outlook support (classic desktop, new Outlook, and web), using email testing tools
• Familiarity with Figma and design handoff workflows
• Version control experience (Git)
• Comfortable with site deployments and working in server environments via SFTP and SSH
• Proactive communicator, able to flag questions before small gaps become blockers
• Adaptable across project types without losing precision
• Due to the geographic distribution of our team, candidates in US time zones are prioritized
• Experience building email templates from scratch a plus
