Remote Position
[Remote] OpenShift Systems Administrator
🌍 Remote · United States
💼 Full-time
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Harman Walsh Government Solutions LLC is seeking an OpenShift Systems Administrator to support a large-scale federal OpenShift Virtualization migration. The role is responsible for hands-on production operations, including cluster health, upgrades, access, storage, automation, monitoring, compliance, and virtual machine migration support.
Responsibilities
- Own day-2 operations of production OpenShift clusters — monitor cluster health, triage degraded ClusterOperators, respond to node and workload incidents, and keep the platform stable
- Manage nodes and operators — node maintenance (cordon/drain), node lifecycle, and Operator health and lifecycle
- Perform and support cluster upgrades — pre-upgrade checks, monitoring the rollout, and remediating operators that fail mid-upgrade
- Administer namespaces and access — projects/namespaces, resource quotas, and RBAC (Roles, RoleBindings, ClusterRoles), including troubleshooting user permission issues
- Support persistent storage — PersistentVolumes, PersistentVolumeClaims, and StorageClasses, and the storage problems that come with them
- Administer RHEL and Windows virtual machines across VMware vSphere and OpenShift Virtualization, and support VM migration execution
- Write and maintain Ansible automation — playbooks and roles you build and own, not just content you run
- Monitor system health, performance, and alerting using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Nagios, or SolarWinds
- Apply and maintain STIG, CIS benchmark, and SCAP/DISA compliance across supported systems
- Write and maintain scripts (BASH, Python, or PowerShell) to support operational tasks
- Participate in scheduled evening and weekend cutover windows as needed
Skills
- 5+ years of systems administration experience
- Hands-on production OpenShift administration — real day-2 experience, not lab or training environments only
- Working command of core platform concepts: cluster health and troubleshooting, nodes and operators, upgrades, namespaces and RBAC, and storage fundamentals (PV/PVC/StorageClass)
- Ansible authoring experience — you must be able to walk through a specific playbook or role you personally wrote or meaningfully modified
- Production RHEL administration experience
- Hands-on experience with VMware vSphere
- Scripting proficiency (BASH, Python, or PowerShell)
- Experience with system monitoring and alerting tools
- U.S. citizenship required
- Experience with OpenShift Virtualization and the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV)
- Red Hat certifications (RHCSA, RHCE, or Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration) and/or Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
- Prior federal government or other highly regulated environment experience
- Familiarity with STIGs, CIS benchmarks, SCAP, and DISA compliance processes
- Experience with enterprise storage and networking integration
- An active Public Trust is a plus
Benefits
- Fully remote — no relocation required
