Remote Position
[Remote] Senior DevOps/Build System Engineer
🌍 Remote · United States
💼 Full-time
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Acronis is hiring a Senior DevOps/Build System Engineer to own and evolve the build system and infrastructure for a complex software product. The role is responsible for reliable, reproducible builds, release pipelines and artifacts, and supporting development and QA teams.
Responsibilities
- Own, design and evolve the build system for a product assembled from a large number of interdependent components written in several programming languages
- Build and maintain the build pipelines end to end: isolated and reproducible builds, dependency and version management, build agents and build farms, artifact repositories and caching — and keep build times, success rates and reproducibility under control as the product grows
- Assemble and validate release deliverables: packages, images and installation artifacts, and the repositories they are distributed from, for several supported release lines maintained in parallel
- Build and operate the release pipeline: automated build validation and regression gating, artifact signing, promotion between channels, and the publishing and rollback procedures around a release
- Keep the product buildable through toolchain and dependency upgrades: resolve compiler, library and dependency conflicts, and keep build definitions and downstream patches maintainable instead of accumulating
- Maintain traceability of everything we ship: versioning and changelogs, artifact provenance, license and SBOM data, and the integration points that security scanning and audits rely on
- Automate build tooling, release steps and the provisioning of build environments in Python and shell, and integrate the build with the team's source control, review and issue tracking workflows
- Support developers and QA day to day: fast self-service builds of branches and merge requests, quick diagnosis of build and packaging failures, and unblocking people whose work is stuck behind the build
- Extend CI/CD coverage: validation on every commit, promotion of artifacts between environments, and integration of automated test suites into release gating
- Own the build infrastructure itself — build hosts and builder images, artifact storage, capacity planning — working with IT and operations where infrastructure is shared
- Investigate complex and intermittent build failures and drive them from root cause to a permanent fix rather than a retry
- Leverage AI-assisted engineering tools for development, code and log analysis, debugging, root-cause investigation and technical research
- Document the build and release processes so that they are reproducible by someone else, and share that expertise with the development and QA teams
- Maintain clear communication with the development lead on build and release status, risks, dependencies and critical issues
Skills
- 5+ years in build, release or DevOps engineering for complex software products, including ownership of a build system as a whole and not only of individual CI jobs
- Strong CI/CD engineering: Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions or comparable; pipelines as code, build agents, and artifact repositories
- Solid experience with software packaging and the distribution of binary artifacts on Linux, including artifact signing and repository or channel management
- Ability to read, fix and take over build definitions written by other teams across multiple languages and build tools (make, CMake, autotools, and language-native build and packaging tooling)
- Deep understanding of dependency and version management, reproducible and hermetic builds, incremental builds and build caching
- Solid Python and shell scripting for build tooling and release automation
- Strong Linux systems knowledge, plus containers and configuration management tooling
- Confident with Git and with branching and release models in a product that maintains several releases at once
- Familiarity with software supply chain practices: signing, SBOM, dependency and vulnerability scanning
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, and the patience to take over a large inherited build system with incomplete documentation
- AI-assisted engineering experience is mandatory, including practical use of AI for development, debugging, log analysis, investigation and technical research
- Demonstrated ability to treat the build as a product that the rest of engineering depends on, and to share technical expertise across teams
- Excellent English communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Experience delivering updates to already installed software — channels, staged rollout, acceptance and rollback — is a strong advantage
- Experience scaling a build system — parallelism, distributed builds, cutting build times from hours to minutes — is a strong advantage
Benefits
- Remote work in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, or Georgia
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Flexible spending accounts (FSA)
- Disability and life insurance
- A 401(k) retirement plan with company match
- A generous vacation policy
