Remote Solid Rocket Motor Engineer
JOB SUMMARY We are seeking an experienced Solid Rocket Motor Engineer to lead the design, development, manufacturing, assembly, and testing of solid rocket motors. This role requires hands-on experience taking a solid rocket motor from initial requirements and preliminary sizing through detailed design, hardware fabrication, static testing, design improvements, and production readiness. The ideal professional combines strong propulsion engineering knowledge with practical hardware development and cross-functional technical leadership. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Lead solid rocket motor development activities, including sizing, design, analysis, manufacturing, assembly, and testing. Design and integrate motor cases, propellant grains, insulation and liners, igniters, nozzles, closures, and related components. Perform or oversee internal ballistics, propulsion performance, structural, thermal, mass-properties, and design-trade analyses. Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, interface requirements, build documentation, and configuration-controlled technical data. Collaborate with manufacturing teams and suppliers to resolve design and production challenges, select materials, and develop manufacturing processes. Plan and support motor assembly, instrumentation, static-fire testing, data analysis, post-test inspections, and failure investigations. Identify and resolve technical issues and incorporate test results into design improvements. Apply design-for-manufacturing and design-for-scale principles to improve repeatability, cost, throughput, and production readiness. Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary teams and mentor engineers and technicians. Support design reviews, build-readiness assessments, test-readiness reviews, and production-readiness milestones. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Propulsion, or a closely related engineering discipline; an advanced degree is preferred. Directly relevant experience in solid rocket motor design and development. Demonstrated hands-on involvement in solid rocket motor design, hardware fabrication, assembly, and static-fire or flight testing. Strong knowledge of internal ballistics, propellant grain geometry, motor cases, nozzles, insulation, materials, manufacturing methods, and propulsion-system integration. Ability to independently drive motor development activities and make sound engineering decisions in a fast-paced hardware environment. Strong technical problem-solving, documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE Rapid prototype-to-test development, tactical-class propulsion, advanced manufacturing, or high-rate solid rocket motor production. Motor case and nozzle design, thermal protection systems, igniter development, structural analysis, pressure systems, or test instrumentation and data analysis. Qualification, production transition, supplier development, root-cause investigations, and technical risk management. Experience leading integrated engineering teams through design, build, test, and production-readiness milestones.
