Remote Position

[Remote] Staff Software Engineer

🌍 Remote Β· United States πŸ’Ό Full-time

Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Samsara is the pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, a platform that uses IoT data to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of physical operations. The Staff Software Engineer will define technical strategy, build and scale full-stack AI-powered products and platform capabilities, and translate ambiguous operational problems into measurable outcomes. The role also includes cross-functional collaboration, technical mentorship, and ownership of mission-critical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of technically complex, mission-critical areas and run with them. We want to point you in a direction and show up to the demo meeting impressed, not spend our weeks managing the details
  • Define and drive technical strategy for new products and platform capabilities, from backend services and APIs to the customer-facing UI
  • Design and ship full-stack features end to end. You'll work across backend, frontend, and potentially mobile to deliver AI-powered products that solve real operational problems
  • Partner with product, design, and customer-facing teams to translate ambiguous, real-world problems into clear technical plans and measurable outcomes
  • Build and scale the systems behind AI-driven products, including data ingestion, APIs, and the workflows that put intelligence into the hands of operators
  • Raise the bar for the engineers around you through code reviews, design reviews, technical mentorship, and by setting a standard for quality, velocity, and craft
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices

Skills

  • This role is remote and open to candidates residing in the US. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of experience in software design and development, including building and operating production systems at scale
  • Strong full-stack fundamentals. You're comfortable working across backend services, APIs, and frontend (web or mobile) to ship complete products
  • Proficiency in modern languages and frameworks (Go, Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, React, or similar)
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-team or cross-org projects from inception through rollout, including managing ambiguity, driving alignment, and delivering measurable impact
  • Experience building AI-powered or data-driven products. You don't need to train models, but you know how to take AI capabilities and turn them into products customers love
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to translate between technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • A track record of building: zero-to-one products, systems you left in a meaningfully better place, or hard problems you refused to let stay unsolved
  • All offers of employment are contingent upon an individual's ability to secure and maintain the legal right to work at the company and in the specified work location, if applicable
  • Experience shipping AI-powered features in production, whether that's LLM-based products, agentic workflows, recommendation systems, or other customer-facing AI
  • Comfort with modern AI-augmented development workflows (Cursor, LLMs, etc.) to multiply your output and accelerate delivery
  • Background working with real-world operational data (telematics, sensor data, work orders, inspections) or a strong interest in learning the domain
  • A proven track record of mentoring senior engineers and influencing engineering culture, standards, and best practices beyond a single team
  • Side projects, open-source contributions, or other signals of curiosity and drive outside the scope of your day job

Benefits

  • Initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff
  • Ongoing refresh opportunities tied to performance, subject to plan terms and conditions
  • Performance-based bonus/variable pay
  • Equity for eligible roles
  • Flexible, employee-led remote model
  • Professional development stipend
  • Comprehensive health plans
  • Parental leave plans
  • Flexible working model supporting remote work where it aligns with operational requirements
