Why Ophthalmology? Why This Role?

Ophthalmology is a dynamic field that blends cutting‑edge medical technology with compassionate patient care. Accurate billing and revenue cycle management are critical to the financial health of any ophthalmology practice, ensuring that providers can continue to deliver high‑quality services while maintaining operational efficiency. As a Senior Remote Ophthalmology Medical Billing Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the practice’s revenue stream, supporting clinicians, and contributing to the overall success of the organization.

Role Overview

As a key member of the remote billing team, you will be responsible for managing the entire billing lifecycle for a high‑volume ophthalmology practice based in the United States. Your expertise will ensure that claims are processed accurately, reimbursements are maximized, and patient accounts remain in good standing. You will work closely with the practice’s office management, insurance carriers, and internal stakeholders to streamline workflows and resolve any billing discrepancies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ophthalmology Billing & Coding: Accurately prepare, code, and submit medical billing claims for a wide range of ophthalmology procedures, including routine eye exams, laser treatments, cataract surgeries, and specialty consults. Ensure compliance with CPT, ICD‑10, and HCPCS coding standards.
  • Claims Management & Follow‑Up: Monitor submitted claims, identify rejections or denials, and file timely appeals or corrections. Track claim status through payer portals and maintain detailed documentation of all interactions.
  • Accounts Receivable Management: Review aging reports, reconcile patient accounts, and follow up on outstanding balances. Coordinate with the practice’s finance team to ensure accurate posting of payments and adjustments.
  • Verification & Documentation: Verify patient insurance benefits, eligibility, and authorization requirements. Ensure that all documentation meets U.S. clinical standards and payer guidelines.
  • Practice Coordination: Collaborate directly with office managers and clinical staff to streamline billing workflows, implement best practices, and provide training on billing procedures.
  • Data Integrity & Reporting: Maintain accurate billing records in the practice management system. Generate regular reports on claim status, denial reasons, and revenue metrics for management review.
  • Compliance & Privacy: Adhere to HIPAA regulations and internal privacy policies. Safeguard patient information and ensure secure handling of all billing data.

Essential Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in ophthalmology medical billing and coding, with a proven track record of accurate claim submission and revenue cycle optimization.
  • Proficiency in U.S. billing software such as Kareo, Athenahealth, AdvancedMD, or similar platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD‑10, HCPCS, and payer‑specific billing guidelines for ophthalmology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Spanish proficiency is not required.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
  • Self‑motivated, proactive, and able to work independently in a fully remote environment.
  • Reliable high‑speed internet connection and a dedicated home office setup.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and patient privacy best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in medical billing and coding (e.g., Certified Professional Biller – CPB, Certified Professional Coder – CPC).
  • Experience with revenue cycle management for multi‑specialty practices.
  • Knowledge of electronic health record (EHR) systems such as EPIC or Allscripts.
  • Previous experience working with U.S. insurance carriers, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private payers.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret financial reports.

Skills & Competencies

  • Technical Proficiency: Comfortable navigating complex billing software, claim portals, and electronic data interchange (EDI) systems.
  • Problem‑Solving: Ability to identify root causes of claim denials and implement corrective actions.
  • Communication: Clear, concise communication with clinicians, insurance representatives, and patients.
  • Time Management: Efficiently prioritize tasks to meet daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines.
  • Team Collaboration: Works effectively with remote teams, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Adaptability: Quickly learns new systems, coding updates, and payer policies.
