Remote Position

Senior US Patent Attorney, Life Sciences

🌍 Remote · United States 💼 Full-time

We are looking for US patent expert, typically from a leading law firm or IP boutique, who wants to build something different in legal. With our engineers and our European patent lead, you will turn the way you reason through US patent questions into a product that life sciences companies use, staying close to clients through our pilots. Within a year, you will have taken it live with our first life sciences clients. About ALTs Law ALTs Law is a legal tech company building AI for science and innovation companies. Our platform pairs the judgment of senior lawyers with AI, so clients get clear answers on the grey-area questions that decide their value: IP, data, regulation and deals. We are early-stage, already working with pilot clients, and building our IP & Patent Management product across Europe and the US. What you’ll do Shape the product roadmap and the US IP offer, and help build the team as we grow. Build the US patent side of our platform with our engineers: what it should answer, how it should reason, and when it should hand over to a human. Work on live client questions through our pilots, from IP diligence for financings and deals to how FDA exclusivities and patent term interact, and feed what you learn back into the product. Set the test cases and quality bar that tell us when the AI is right, and challenge it when it is not. Make your reasoning on freedom-to-operate, validity and patentability explicit, so the product reaches a clear risk call rather than a list of caveats. What we’re looking for Registered to practise before the USPTO and admitted to at least one US bar. 6 or more years of US patent practice in life sciences, at a leading law firm, IP boutique or in-house, including hands-on drafting and prosecution. A degree in a life science, such as molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry or pharmacology. Experience giving freedom-to-operate and validity opinions on small molecules, biologics or diagnostics. Experience advising life sciences companies at three or more points in their lifecycle: university spin-out, venture financing, clinical development, licensing and partnering, acquisition, and commercialisation. You will also bring A real wish to build something new in legal, rather than recreate a law firm. Curiosity about AI and enjoyment of working with engineers. No coding needed. The ability to explain your reasoning step by step, including where the grey areas are. Preferred A MA/PhD in Life sciences. Experience before the European Patent Office or the Unified Patent Court. Patent Trial and Appeal Board or litigation experience. Experience with legal tech products, as a user, adviser or builder. Why ALTs Law Build, not just bill: your expertise shapes a product used across many clients, not one matter at a time. Ownership: equity in an early-stage company and a real say in what we build. Peers: senior IP experts in Europe and the US, and engineers who take legal reasoning seriously. How we work Location: Remote. Engagement: Full-time employment preferred, with salary and equity. For the right person, we are also open to a part-time consultancy. Conflicts: You will need to be free of exclusive ties to a large pharma client.
