Remote Position

Shopify Quality Reviewer

🌍 Remote · United States 💼 Full-time

Title: Shopify Quality Reviewer (Contract) Company: Co-Curator Location: Remote (Must work US time zones) Type: Contractor Hours: 5–10 hours/week baseline, bursting to 20+ hours/week in the two weeks before a client launch Compensation: $35–$55/hr (DOE) Commitment: Ongoing, minimum 3-month engagement. First engagements are pre-launch rounds on a Horizon theme rebuild and a member portal for two existing US museum clients. Reports to: Founder, Co-Curator

About the Role

Co-Curator is hiring a detail-obsessed Shopify operator to be the last set of eyes on our work before a client ever sees it. We build Shopify Plus storefronts, Horizon themes, and custom member-facing apps for museums and cultural institutions. Right now the person who builds is also the person who tests, and that is the gap this role closes. This is not a developer role and we are not looking for one. We want someone who knows the Shopify ecosystem well from the merchant side: themes and the Theme Editor, the app ecosystem, customer accounts, checkout, discounts, shipping, orders, POS. Someone who has set up products and collections, installed and configured apps, lived in the Theme Editor, and processed real orders and refunds. You know what a Shopify store is supposed to do because you have run one, and you notice when it doesn't. You will review two kinds of work. Themes: Horizon-based storefronts, new sections and templates, Theme Editor settings, the merchant experience of editing content. Apps: custom-built features that live inside Shopify, like a member portal in customer accounts, a member-pricing rule at checkout, a membership card in the account area. You do not need to understand how either is built. You need to know how a good Shopify store behaves, and hold our work to that. Your output is written. After each test round you send one email that tells us exactly what is wrong, where, how to reproduce it, and what you expected instead. We build from AI-assisted plans, and a precise finding from you becomes the spec for the fix, often word for word. If you write bug reports that a developer can act on without asking you a follow-up question, this role will suit you.

Responsibilities

  • Run a structured review round on every deliverable before it goes to client review: theme changes, new sections and templates, Theme Editor settings, checkout and customer-account flows, custom app features
  • Test as the customer and as the merchant: the storefront on desktop and mobile, and the admin side too (does the Theme Editor setting do what its label says, does the metafield entry render, does the order land correctly, does the notification email arrive)
  • Work from a short test brief we send you (what changed, what to focus on), then go beyond it. The brief is the floor, not the ceiling
  • Write one report email per round in our format (below), severity-ranked, reproducible, with screenshots or short screen recordings
  • Re-test after fixes ship and confirm closure explicitly. Nothing is closed until you say it is
  • Execute pre-launch checklists: redirects, analytics tags, payment flow, order confirmations, email notifications, third-party apps, POS smoke test where applicable
  • Run a baseline accessibility pass on every round: can you get through it on a keyboard alone, can you see where you are, do images have alt text, is the text readable against its background, does the checker light up. Full audits are scoped separately; the baseline is not optional
  • Regression-check a light smoke suite across our supported clients monthly, between launches
  • Reproduce bugs the client reports with clean steps so the fix starts from a known state
  • Log findings in Linear once triaged. The email comes first; Linear is the record

How We Work: The Review Loop

  • We ship to a preview. A development theme, a dev store, or a staging app environment. You never test on a client's live store unless we explicitly ask for a production verification pass.
  • You get a brief. A few lines: what changed, which pages or flows, which devices matter most, anything we are nervous about, and a deadline.
  • You test. Customer side and merchant side. Desktop and mobile. Chrome and Safari at minimum. Logged out, logged in, and as a member where membership exists.
  • You send the report. One email, same day or by the deadline. See format below.
  • We fix. Your findings become the build plan. If something is unclear we will ask once; if we are asking often, the format is not working.
  • You re-test and close. A second shorter email: what is fixed, what is not, anything new the fix introduced.
  • It goes to the client. Only after your close. Client acceptance testing then becomes confirmation, not discovery.

The Report Format One email per round. Subject: QA: client – what was tested – Round n.

  • Summary. Two or three sentences. Ready for client, or not, and why
  • Blockers. Anything that would embarrass us in front of the client or break a purchase
  • Should fix. Real problems that are not launch-blocking
  • Polish. Spacing, copy, alignment, consistency. Still list them
  • Tested and passed. What you covered that worked. This section matters as much as the findings. We need to know what was looked at, not just what broke
  • Not tested. Anything you could not reach and why (no test account, no POS hardware, blocked by a dependency)

Requirements

  • Available during US business hours, with same-day turnaround on test rounds when a launch is close
  • 2+ years running or helping run a Shopify store as a merchant, store manager, ecommerce manager, or operations lead. Agency experience is welcome but merchant-side experience is what we are screening for
  • Well versed in the Shopify ecosystem, not just the admin: how themes work from a merchant's seat (Theme Editor, sections and blocks, what a well-built theme lets you do and what it shouldn't make you do), the app ecosystem (what good apps feel like, how they show up in the storefront and in checkout), customer accounts, discounts, shipping, orders, and ideally POS
  • Experience with the new Shopify customer accounts and checkout as a user or operator, or ready to learn them fast. Much of our app work lives there
  • Attention to detail is a must. We will test for it in the application and in the work. If a misaligned icon or an inconsistent capitalization bothers you, good
  • Excellent written English. Clear, specific, unambiguous. Your writing is the deliverable
  • Comfortable testing across devices and browsers and recording what you see. No technical tooling required; we will show you the one or two browser tricks we rely on in your first week
  • Working familiarity with Linear, Jira, Asana, or similar, and a habit of closing the loop
  • Methodical. You work from a checklist, you document what you did and did not cover, and you do not sign off on something you did not personally exercise
  • NDA required as part of the hiring process. You will have access to client stores and pre-release work
  • Available enough that a launch window will not find you unreachable. We screen for this

Tech Stack & Tools

  • Platforms: Shopify, Shopify Plus, Shopify POS, customer accounts (new), checkout and customer-account UI extensions
  • What you'll be reviewing: Horizon-based themes, JSON templates driven by metafields and metaobjects, Theme Editor settings and blocks, custom apps that surface membership, ticketing, and CRM data inside Shopify
  • Testing tools: Real devices (your own phone and laptop go a long way); BrowserStack or equivalent for the browser matrix; a one-click accessibility checker like WAVE or axe for the baseline; Loom or similar for recordings. We will set you up on anything you don't already have
  • Operations: Email (your reports), Slack, Linear, Google Workspace, Harvest (time tracking)
  • Not required: Cursor, GitHub, or any code editor. You will not be committing code

Preferred

  • Shopify Plus experience as an operator
  • Experience with membership or loyalty programs, ticketing, or customer-account personalization from the merchant side
  • Museum, cultural institution, nonprofit, or specialty retail background
  • Prior QA, UAT coordination, or launch-checklist ownership, even informally
  • Familiarity with accessibility basics beyond the tooling
  • Shopify certifications or Verified Skills (Co-Curator will cover the cost of relevant ones once onboarded)
  • About Co-Curator

Founded by Bradley Platz, Co-Curator is a Shopify Plus Partner agency delivering ecommerce solutions for museums and cultural retailers. We blend design, engineering, and technology consulting to help mission-driven institutions thrive online. Our clients include major US museums and cultural institutions. We build fast, and this role is how we make sure fast also means right. To Apply NO recruiters. NO agencies. Independent Professionals ONLY. Please send the following to [email protected]:

  • A brief introduction describing the Shopify store or stores you have run or helped run, your role, and what you were responsible for day to day
  • A sample review report. Pick any live Shopify store (not one of ours) and spend 30 to 45 minutes on it as a customer and, where you can, think like its store manager. Write it up in the report format above, as if you were sending it to us. We are reading for precision, reproducibility, and judgment about severity. Three sharp findings beat fifteen vague ones
  • A short answer to: "A client emails that 'the member discount isn't working.' What do you do in the next hour?"
  • Confirmation of your location and time zone
  • Your availability (hours per week, and how quickly you can turn a test round when a launch is close) and preferred start date
  • LinkedIn or anything else that shows your Shopify operating history
  • Subject line: Shopify Quality Reviewer – Contractor Application
