Remote Position

Software Engineer ( Python and SQL)

🌍 Remote · United States 💼 Full-time

About Owlue Owlue is a revenue-generating, seed-stage company that automates the property tax appeal process from start to finish. Its platform identifies potentially over-assessed homes, values properties, prepares supporting evidence, and files appeals. The challenge is building defensible valuation cases at scale across counties with different property records, valuation practices, and appeal requirements.

About the Role

Owlue is looking for a professional who combines hands-on property appraisal or assessment experience with production software development skills. As a valuation model engineer, you’ll build and maintain the models that turn raw county data into well-supported property valuations and evidence packages homeowners can use in tax appeals. Each county presents its own requirements, from comparable sales and property characteristics to local rules for evaluating evidence. You’ll develop models that account for these differences and produce valuation grids and written explanations that meet the expectations of local appeals boards. You’ll work directly with the founders and the engineer who developed Owlue’s first county models.

Key Responsibilities

Own county valuation models from raw property data through the preparation of evidence packages for homeowners. Identify comparable sales using relevant property classifications, sale dates, locations, and features that help establish a defensible valuation. Evaluate comparable properties and ensure the subject property is appropriately bracketed on important characteristics. Calculate market-supported adjustments for factors such as time trends, property condition, views, waterfront access, site characteristics, and basements. Incorporate jurisdiction-specific rules into valuation models, including gross adjustment limits, the subject property's recent sale history, and property fields that counties do not record. Generate valuation grids and written narratives that align with the expectations of boards of equalization. Investigate unexpected valuation results, identify the underlying causes, and improve model accuracy. Collaborate with the existing valuation engineering team and company founders to develop and refine county-specific models.

Required Qualifications

Professional experience as a property appraiser, assessor, or property tax consultant. Understanding of paired sales analysis, comparable property selection, bracketing, and property tax appeal hearings. Production software development experience using Python and SQL. Experience building valuation models rather than only using existing tools or models. Strong analytical skills and a willingness to investigate discrepancies and understand the reasons behind unexpected results.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with mass appraisal or Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) systems. IAAO coursework, USPAP knowledge, or a relevant professional designation such as MAI, SRA, or CAE. Experience with regression analysis or hedonic modeling. Location & Employment Type Full-time W-2 position. Fully remote within the United States. Compensation & Benefits Meaningful equity for an early employee. Health, dental, and vision coverage. Flexible paid time off (PTO).

How to Apply

Submit your resume or LinkedIn profile, along with a paragraph describing a valuation you had to defend. Explain the opposing argument and how you supported and defended your valuation.
