About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer to join our remote team. This role is ideal for an experienced professional who thrives in a fast-paced startup environment and has a proven track record of developing and deploying scalable backend systems. As a key contributor, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the core backend services and APIs that power our marketplace platform. This position offers a contract-to-hire arrangement, allowing both parties to evaluate fit and performance before transitioning to a full-time role. The successful candidate will demonstrate independence, reliability, and a strong commitment to code quality, with the ability to own features from conception through deployment and monitoring.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess over five years of professional experience in backend engineering, with a focus on delivering production-grade systems. Proficiency in Python and modern API frameworks such as FastAPI is essential. You should have extensive experience designing RESTful APIs and building scalable backend services. Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, including schema design, indexing, and query optimization, is required. Hands-on experience deploying and managing services on AWS, utilizing containers like Docker, and implementing CI/CD pipelines is crucial. Additionally, familiarity with integrating third-party APIs, building fault-tolerant systems, and practicing rigorous testing is expected. An enthusiasm for AI-powered development tools and a proactive approach to adopting new technologies will set you apart.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, secure backend services and REST APIs that serve our marketplace platform. This includes owning features end-to-end—from initial design, implementation, and testing to deployment and ongoing monitoring in production environments. You will model, evolve, and optimize our PostgreSQL database schema, ensuring high performance and reliability. Integrating third-party APIs and internal services with a focus on fault tolerance and clean error handling will be a key aspect of your role. You will write automated tests to uphold our high standards for code quality and reliability. Deploying and operating services within a cloud environment such as AWS, including managing CI/CD pipelines, logging, metrics, and alerting, will also be part of your responsibilities. Collaborating closely with product managers, frontend developers, and other engineering teams to ship user-facing features efficiently and iterate based on feedback is essential. Additionally, you will leverage AI-powered development tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Copilot to accelerate development cycles, enhance code quality, and improve overall productivity while maintaining a focus on delivering reliable, maintainable solutions.
