[Remote] Senior Backend Engineer (Java/Spring) (REMOTE U.S.)

Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. MarketTime is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and evolve its ecommerce platform. The role focuses on secure, scalable Java/Spring services and APIs, technical architecture, production operations, and mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, deploy, and maintain Spring Boot services powering our SaaS ecommerce platform
• Design secure, scalable, and highly available solutions that meet PCI DSS and other security requirements
• Design and build REST APIs that are intuitive, backwards-compatible, secure, and performant
• Collaborate with Product, QA, and other engineers throughout the software development lifecycle
• Design and optimize relational database schemas, queries, and data access patterns using MySQL
• Participate in architectural discussions and help drive technical decisions across the platform
• Write clean, maintainable, and idiomatic Java using modern language features and engineering best practices
• Champion engineering best practices including code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and documentation
• Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate delivery, while owning the correctness, security, and maintainability of everything you ship
• Take ownership of features from design through production, including monitoring and operational support
• Work in small, incremental pull requests with a strong emphasis on code reviews, automated testing, and continuous delivery
• Help evolve our architecture by challenging assumptions and continuously improving how we build software
• Mentor and support engineers through technical leadership, design reviews, and pair programming
• Troubleshoot production issues and participate in an on-call rotation as needed

Skills

• Operated as a senior engineer or technical lead on Java backend applications
• Strong expertise with Spring Boot 3+ and the broader Spring ecosystem
• Strong proficiency with modern Java, with new development targeting Java 25
• Ability to write clean, idiomatic Java using modern language features such as streams, lambda expressions, Optional, records, and pattern matching
• Experience with Hibernate/JPA or jOOQ
• Hands-on experience building and operating production workloads on AWS
• Proven ability to design and build RESTful APIs
• Strong SQL skills with MySQL or PostgreSQL
• Working knowledge of asynchronous messaging systems (SQS, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ)
• Experience building and deploying containerized applications
• Experience with GitHub Actions or other modern CI/CD platforms
• Hands-on experience using AI coding tools in professional work, with sound judgment about when to trust, verify, or discard their output, and a clear understanding of what data must never be shared with them
• Solid understanding of software design principles and distributed systems
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
• A track record of mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives
• Self-motivated and effective working in a remote-first environment
• Experience building and operating multi-tenant SaaS applications
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and GitOps practices
• Hands-on experience deploying and operating AWS services including VPCs, ALBs, EC2, ECS, SQS, and S3
• Working knowledge of React or Angular
• Understanding of payment processing systems, PCI DSS, and security best practices
• Background in ecommerce, fintech, or payment processing
• Familiarity with API security concepts including OAuth 2.0, JWT, authentication, authorization, and rate limiting
• Experience with test-driven development (TDD) and modern testing frameworks
• Experience establishing team practices for AI-assisted development (e.g., shared context and conventions files, review standards for AI-generated code, guardrails for sensitive data)
• Exposure to C#/.NET is a plus
