Position Overview
As a Senior Mechatronics Development Engineer based in the vibrant city of Oberkochen, Germany, you will be at the forefront of designing, simulating, and validating mechatronic systems for microlithography projection and illumination optics. Your work will directly influence the performance of next‑generation semiconductor fabrication tools, ensuring they meet the exacting standards of speed, precision, and reliability required by the industry. You will collaborate with world‑class hardware, software, and systems engineering teams, and you will be the technical voice that bridges the gap between conceptual design and production‑ready solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Conceptual Design & Documentation – Lead the end‑to‑end development of mechatronic system concepts for projection and illumination optics, focusing on dynamic behavior and control strategies. Produce detailed design documents, specifications, and integration plans that serve as the foundation for cross‑functional teams.
- Modeling, Simulation & Analysis – Build multi‑physics models (MBS, FEM, structural dynamics) to predict system performance under realistic operating conditions. Use MATLAB, Simulink, and other advanced tools to simulate control algorithms for sub‑nanometer positioning accuracy, and validate models against experimental data.
- Control Algorithm Development – Independently design, implement, and validate control schemes that enable fast, precise motion of micro‑scale mechanical components. Iterate on algorithms based on simulation and experimental data, ensuring robustness against disturbances and component variability.
- Prototype Realization & Testing – Oversee the fabrication of prototypes, coordinate testing schedules, and analyze test results to verify design intent. Translate test findings into actionable design improvements and iterate prototypes until performance targets are met.
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration – Work closely with hardware, software, and systems engineering teams, as well as external partners and customers, to ensure seamless integration and alignment with project goals. Communicate technical concepts clearly to non‑technical stakeholders.
- Specification & Budget Management – Translate performance requirements into component specifications, estimate costs, and manage budgets to keep projects on track. Provide regular status updates to senior leadership and adjust plans proactively.
- Continuous Improvement – Identify opportunities to enhance design processes, tooling, and documentation practices. Champion the adoption of new technologies and methodologies that increase efficiency, quality, and innovation.
Essential Qualifications
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience designing complex mechatronic systems, preferably within the semiconductor or precision optics domain.
- Deep expertise in dynamic analysis (frequency & time domain), multi‑body dynamics, finite element analysis, and system validation.
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, with a track record of developing and validating control algorithms for high‑speed, high‑precision applications.
- Strong analytical mindset, with the ability to translate complex requirements into robust, manufacturable solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; German language proficiency is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects, manage stakeholders, and mentor junior team members.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with actuators, sensors, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, or optical engineering.
- Knowledge of systems engineering frameworks (e.g., SysML, V‑model) and experience in cross‑disciplinary integration.
- Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication processes and the specific requirements of lithography equipment.
- Background in AI or machine learning applied to control systems.
- Prior exposure to agile development methodologies and continuous integration pipelines.
Skills & Competencies
- Technical Proficiency – Advanced modeling, simulation, and control algorithm development.
- Problem‑Solving – Ability to diagnose complex mechanical and electronic issues and devise innovative solutions.
- Project Management – Experience setting milestones, tracking progress, and delivering on time and within budget.
