Senior Staff Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) – AI‑Powered Quality Architecture & Customer Engineering Lead at brighthush
About brighthush
brighthush is a trailblazing health and wellness platform that is redefining how people experience care. By putting the customer at the center of every decision, we deliver personalized, affordable, and accessible health solutions—from diagnosis to treatment to delivery—using cutting‑edge technology and data‑driven insights. Our mission is simple: help the world feel great through the power of better health. As a publicly traded company on the NYSE (ticker: BRIGHT), we combine the agility of a startup with the resources of a global enterprise, empowering our teams to innovate, iterate, and scale at an unprecedented pace.
Why This Role Is a Game‑Changer
In the world of software quality, the most valuable engineers are no longer judged by the number of tests they write. They are judged by the systems they build that decide whether software is safe to ship—especially when those systems harness artificial intelligence. As a Senior Staff SDET at brighthush, you will own the quality architecture for our most critical products, lead the integration of AI across our testing and release pipelines, and shape the future of how we ship reliable, AI‑powered health solutions.
Role Overview
What You’ll Do
- Own quality architecture and strategy. Define long‑term quality goals that align with business and product objectives, and design shared platforms, frameworks, and infrastructure that are adopted across multiple engineering teams.
- Lead AI‑driven testing. Build autonomous test generation, intelligent test selection, agent‑based failure triage, and self‑healing automation. Establish guardrails that keep AI trustworthy and prevent regressions from being masked.
- Set the standard for “great” quality. Create quality metrics, dashboards, and release confidence indicators that become the benchmark for the entire organization.
- Mentor and elevate the team. Coach senior SDETs, quality engineers, and technical leaders, fostering AI fluency and raising the technical bar across the group.
- Drive operational excellence. Own post‑incident analysis, root‑cause investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives that reduce technical debt and enhance reliability.
- Collaborate with product and engineering leadership. Embed scalability, resilience, and customer‑centric quality into roadmap planning and technical design.
Why This Role Is Different
- AI is at the core of everything you build—no legacy tools, just fresh, AI‑native quality systems.
- You’ll test AI, not just test with it, by creating evaluation harnesses, golden datasets, and probabilistic assertions for non‑deterministic behavior.
- You’ll have real autonomy and scope, setting the technical direction for quality engineering rather than inheriting someone else’s strategy.
Essential Qualifications
- 10+ years of hands‑on experience in quality engineering or SDET roles, including architecting quality strategy and automation platforms across multiple teams.
- Proven track record designing and scaling test automation frameworks for full‑stack applications (frontend web, mobile, backend/API) using tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Appium, or Postman.
- Deep proficiency in at least one modern programming language (JavaScript, TypeScript, Kotlin, or similar) used to build production‑grade automation frameworks and tooling.
- Hands‑on experience applying AI to testing—LLM‑assisted test generation, agent‑based workflows, intelligent test selection, or self‑healing automation—with a clear understanding of where AI delivers value and where it falls short.
- Strong grasp of modern development and delivery practices (Agile/Lean, DevOps, shift‑left testing, TDD) and experience embedding quality gates into CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Jenkins).
- Experience mentoring senior quality engineers and technical leaders, raising the technical bar across a group or organization.
- History of leading post‑incident and root‑cause analysis that drives architectural and process change.
- Excellent judgment on trade‑offs between short‑term delivery and long‑term system resilience.
- Strong executive communication skills, with the ability to influence engineering and product leadership on quality strategy, risk, and investment.
- Experience with performance and load testing at scale.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with LLM observability and evaluation tooling (Braintrust, Arize, MLflow, LangSmith, or similar).
- Experience with cloud‑based testing platforms (AWS Device Farm, Sauce Labs, BrowserStack).
- Background in regulated environments such as e‑commerce or healthcare, with quality‑at‑scale practices.
- Experience with internationalization and localization testing.
- Track record building quality engineering communities of practice—tech talks, katas, lunch‑and‑learns.
- Published writing, talks, or open‑source contributions on modern testing practices or AI in quality engineering.
- Experience building evaluation or testing infrastructure for LLM‑based or ML‑driven product features (e.g., eval harnesses, LLM‑as‑judge scoring, regression testing for non‑deterministic systems).
Skills & Competencies
- Strategic thinking and architectural vision.
- Hands‑on coding and framework development.
- AI fluency—understanding of LLMs, agents, and their application to testing.
- Data‑driven decision making and statistical analysis.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management.
- Mentorship and leadership.
- Adaptability in a fast‑moving, high‑impact environment.
