Role Description The Sr Back End Engineer is a part-time, remote role responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable backend services that power Butterknife®’s real-time peer-to-peer data exchange platform. Min 10 years experience. This role includes architecting and optimizing APIs, data models, and microservices, as well as integrating security and privacy best practices into all backend components. The engineer will collaborate closely with product and frontend teams to translate requirements into robust technical solutions, perform code reviews, and ensure high performance and reliability in production environments. Architecture: Hybrid Monolith + Microservices What We’re Looking For Strong coding skills are essential. We are looking for someone who is hands-on—not simply managing or supervising development. The ideal candidate should be comfortable with backend development, production monitoring, APIs, databases, Docker/containerized environments, Terraform/infrastructure-as-code, debugging, performance optimization, security remediation, and maintaining an existing production codebase. We particularly value an engineer who can identify a problem, get into the code, and fix it independently. Startup/SaaS experience and experience supporting a platform transitioning from beta to production are strongly preferred. Compensation $1,000/month flat fee for ongoing maintenance and monitoring. Substantial new feature development or work materially outside the maintenance scope would be discussed and compensated separately. This is an opportunity to become involved with ButterKnife.ai at an early stage, with the potential for the relationship to expand as the platform grows. To apply: Send a brief introduction, LinkedIn/GitHub profile, relevant backend experience, and examples of production systems you have maintained or scaled. Strong proficiency in one or more backend programming languages (e.g., Python, Node.js, Go, or Java) and experience building production-grade APIs and services. Hands-on experience with databases and data storage (e.g., SQL/NoSQL, data modeling, performance tuning) and familiarity with real-time or event-driven architectures. Background in cloud infrastructure and DevOps practices (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure; containerization; CI/CD; monitoring and logging). Knowledge of security and privacy best practices, including authentication, authorization, encryption, and secure data handling. Experience with distributed systems, scalability, and high-availability design for backend platforms. Ability to work independently in a remote environment, manage part-time hours effectively, and collaborate asynchronously with cross-functional teams. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Prior work on data platforms, peer-to-peer systems, or privacy-focused products is a plus.
