Remote Position
[Remote] Senior UX Designer, Web Experience - Remote
π Remote Β· United States
πΌ Full-time
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. UnitedHealth Group is hiring a Senior UX Designer to shape, implement, and continuously improve user-centered web experiences. The role partners with content, business, digital, and technology teams to translate user needs and objectives into accessible, responsive designs, optimize experiences, and help advance design practices, including exploration of AI tools.
Responsibilities
- Partner with content, digital, business, and technology stakeholders to understand objectives, user needs, constraints, and measures of success
- Translate loosely defined requests and complex content requirements into clear, intuitive web experiences
- Frame experience problems and recommend appropriate solutions rather than assuming the initial request or proposed deliverable is necessarily the right answer
- Use information architecture, content hierarchy, interaction design, and user journey thinking to organize complex information into understandable and useful experiences
- Design new pages, page systems, and digital experiences, often beginning with limited direction or an initial content or business brief
- Create wireframes, experience concepts, high-fidelity designs, and interactive prototypes in Figma to explore and communicate design recommendations
- Explore multiple design approaches where appropriate and develop a clear point of view around the recommended solution
- Build, update, and publish experiences within our content management system, including Adobe Experience Manager (AEM)
- Work alongside the broader digital team to continuously iterate and improve existing web experiences rather than treating launch as the end of the design process
- Apply human-centered design, accessibility, responsive design, usability, and interaction-design best practices throughout the work
- Identify opportunities to improve page architecture, hierarchy, storytelling, navigation, comprehension, engagement, and overall user experience
- Recommend changes to content structure, page architecture, or experience flow when the initial request does not represent the solidest solution
- Make minor HTML and CSS adjustments when appropriate to achieve the intended experience within the CMS
- Design within established design systems and component libraries while recognizing opportunities to appropriately extend, evolve, or challenge existing patterns
- QA implemented experiences across screen sizes and environments to help ensure design quality, accessibility, responsiveness, and consistency
- Use analytics, behavioral insights, user feedback, research, and other signals to identify experience problems and opportunities
- Where appropriate, define what success looks like for an experience and use post launch signals to understand whether the design is achieving its intended outcome
- Apply lightweight research and validation methods when they will materially improve a decision, including usability testing, stakeholder interviews, prototype testing, competitive analysis, or evaluation of behavioral data
- Develop hypotheses about how an experience could be improved and translate those hypotheses into design recommendations or experiments
- Balance user needs, business objectives, content requirements, technical constraints, accessibility, and visual quality when making design decisions
- Look beyond individual requests to identify recurring experience challenges that may be better solved through reusable patterns, new components, design-system evolution, or broader experience guidance
- Bring a solid visual and interaction design point of view to the team and help elevate the quality of our digital experiences
- Apply solid judgment around typography, layout, hierarchy, imagery, interaction, motion where appropriate, and responsive behavior
- Explore creative approaches rather than automatically defaulting to existing patterns
- Source, evaluate, and curate photography and other visual assets for use in web experiences when needed
- Ensure digital experiences align with broader brand standards while remaining appropriate for the channel, audience, and user need
- Maintain a high bar for craft and polish while working effectively within real-world technical and organizational constraints
- Actively explore how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies can support and improve the design process
- Experiment with AI-enabled approaches for activities such as ideation, prototyping, research synthesis, content exploration, design iteration, workflow acceleration, or other relevant applications
- Apply thoughtful judgment when using AI tools, recognizing their capabilities, limitations, and appropriate role within the design process
- Share useful AI-enabled methods, tools, or learnings with the broader team and help identify opportunities where emerging technology can meaningfully improve how we work
- Maintain curiosity about changes in digital design, technology, and user behavior and consider how those changes should influence our experiences and practices
- Independently move projects from ambiguous requests through problem framing, concept development, design, implementation, launch, and improvement
- Present design concepts and clearly articulate the reasoning, evidence, assumptions, and tradeoffs behind design decisions
- Challenge stakeholder requests constructively when a different approach may better address the underlying user or business need
- Collaborate closely with content strategists, developers, marketers, analysts, product partners, and other designers
- Help stakeholders understand how content, technology, and design decisions affect the overall user experience
- Bring ideas, recommendations, and opportunities forward proactively rather than relying on highly prescriptive direction
- Help raise the team's UX and digital-design maturity by sharing practices, facilitating constructive critique, introducing useful methods, and helping establish repeatable approaches to experience-design problems
- Recognize when an individual design problem reflects a broader systemic need and advocate for improvements to patterns, components, standards, or design systems
Skills
- 5+ years of experience in UX, digital experience, interaction, web, product, or design, with experience operating at a mid-to-senior level
- A solid portfolio demonstrating high-quality web and digital experience design, including examples of translating ambiguous business or content needs into compelling, usable experiences
- Demonstrated ability to frame experience problems rather than simply execute predetermined solutions
- Proven proficiency in Figma, including experience design, components, wireframing, prototyping, and high-fidelity visual design
- Hands-on experience working within a content management system to create and update web experiences
- Demonstrated solid understanding of information architecture, content hierarchy, interaction design, usability, responsive design, accessibility, layout, typography, and visual hierarchy
- Demonstrated solid working knowledge of UX and human-centered design principles, with the judgment to apply them pragmatically based on the needs of the project
- Experience working with established design systems and component-based web experiences
- Proven ability to take a project from an initial request through problem framing, design, implementation, and refinement with limited oversight
- Demonstrated comfortability working in environments where requirements may evolve and the path forward is not always clearly defined
- Demonstrated solid communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain design decisions and tradeoffs to non-design stakeholders
- Experience using analytics, user feedback, research, or other qualitative and quantitative signals to inform design decisions and improvements
- Demonstrated solid attention to detail and a high bar for design quality
- Demonstrated curiosity about artificial intelligence and emerging design technologies, with demonstrated experimentation or practical exploration of how these tools can improve design work
- Demonstrated working knowledge of HTML and CSS and the ability to make minor front-end adjustments or troubleshoot presentation issues
- Experience designing and improving complex content-driven websites
- Experience conducting lightweight usability testing, prototype validation, or other forms of user research
- Experience sourcing and curating photography for digital experiences
- Demonstrated familiarity with WCAG and inclusive-design practices
- Experience working in a large, complex organization with multiple stakeholders and established brand, technology, or governance standards
- Experience contributing to or evolving a design system
- Experience working with digital analytics or experimentation platforms
- Experience applying AI-enabled tools within UX, design, research, prototyping, development, or related workflows
