[Remote] Software Engineer ll

Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Hertz is seeking a Software Engineer II to support its digital transformation and modernization of transportation technology. The role focuses on designing, developing, testing, and maintaining Java-based applications, REST APIs, and cloud services that support fleet utilization, inventory optimization, and operational decision-making.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain applications and services using Java and cloud-based technologies
• Build and support REST APIs and backend services that enable critical business functionality
• Develop solutions that support fleet utilization, inventory optimization, and operational decision-making
• Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders to define requirements and deliver solutions
• Utilize modern engineering tools, including AI-assisted development platforms such as GitHub Copilot and Cursor, to improve development velocity
• Design, implement and maintain applications that can be high-volume and low-latency
• Contribute to all stages of software development lifecycle
• Analyze user requirements to define business objectives
• Envisioning system features and functionality
• Develop and test software
• Identify and resolve any technical issues arising
• Create detailed design documentation
• Propose changes to current infrastructure
• Develop technical designs for application development
• Write well designed, testable code
• Conducting software analysis, programming, testing, and debugging
• Support continuous improvement, investigating alternatives and technologies, and presenting for architectural review

Skills

• B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages and common data structures / algorithms
• 2+ years of software engineering experience developing backend applications or services
• Experience with Java or another modern object-oriented programming language
• Experience building and consuming REST APIs
• Experience working within cloud environments, preferably AWS
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern software development practices
• Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, object-oriented design, and system architecture
• Ability to write production-ready code with moderate supervision
• Ability to design systems of moderate complexity
• Ability to conduct code reviews and give sign-off for code merges
• Strong communication skills. You must be able to work with cross-functional partners to gather requirements and explain outcomes
• Strong product sense. You must be able to align your work with business objectives and make appropriate tradeoffs
• Learning mentality. You must be able to pick up new skills as needed and demonstrate a curiosity about new technologies
