Job Title: Senior PostgreSQL Database Engineer Location: Remote Duration: Fulltime Job Description: We are seeking an experienced Senior PostgreSQL Database Engineer to design, develop, optimize, and support enterprise-scale PostgreSQL databases and cloud-based data platforms. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in database administration, SQL/PL/pgSQL development, performance tuning, high availability, disaster recovery, and data integration. The role involves working closely with application development, data engineering, cloud, and infrastructure teams to deliver secure, scalable, and highly available database solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain enterprise PostgreSQL databases, schemas, and scalable data models. Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries, PL/pgSQL functions, stored procedures, views, and materialized views. Perform database performance tuning, query optimization, indexing, execution plan analysis, and VACUUM optimization. Manage database replication, high availability, failover, backups, recovery, and disaster recovery processes. Build and support ETL/ELT pipelines, Kafka integrations, change data capture (CDC), and batch/real-time data processing. Support cloud database environments, including AWS RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, and Google Cloud SQL. Implement database security, role-based access control (RBAC), encryption, auditing, and data governance standards. Collaborate with application teams to support APIs, microservices, and cloud-native applications. Monitor database health, troubleshoot production issues, and improve data quality and reliability. Support database migrations, infrastructure automation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Hands-on PostgreSQL development, database administration, or database engineering experience in enterprise environments. Strong knowledge of database design, data modeling, schema design, normalization, denormalization, partitioning, and scalability. Advanced SQL and PL/pgSQL skills, including CTEs, window functions, stored procedures, views, and materialized views. Experience with performance tuning, indexing strategies (B-Tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN, and Hash), statistics management, and execution plan analysis. Knowledge of high availability, replication, failover, backup/recovery, read replicas, and disaster recovery. Experience with ETL/ELT pipelines, Kafka integrations, CDC, and data processing workflows. Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language, such as Python, Java, or Bash. Hands-on experience with cloud-based PostgreSQL platforms. Understanding of database security, access controls, encryption, auditing, and protection of sensitive data, including PHI/PII. Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
