We are driven by a mission to make data‑driven decision‑making faster, smarter, and more accessible, and we do so by building the next generation of AI tools that work for people, not the other way around.

The Role

As a Senior Software Engineer on our Applied AI team, you will be at the forefront of building customer‑facing AI solutions that solve real business problems. You will work side‑by‑side with brighthush’s strategic clients, diving deep into their workflows, identifying opportunities where AI can add value, and then turning those ideas into production‑ready products.

Your day will involve a blend of rapid prototyping, rigorous evaluation, and close collaboration with both clients and our core engineering teams. Because the team is new, your work will shape the direction of the product line and set the standards for future AI initiatives across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build End‑to‑End AI‑Powered Agents: Design, develop, and deploy intelligent agents that address client pain points, from data ingestion to actionable insights.
  • LLM Integration & Prompt Engineering: Implement LLM integrations—prompt engineering, function calling, structured outputs, and retrieval‑augmented workflows—to deliver high‑quality, domain‑specific responses.
  • Define Evaluation Criteria: Create robust test harnesses and evaluation frameworks that measure correctness, relevance, and safety in domain‑specific contexts.
  • Client‑Centric Validation: Conduct live demos, gather feedback, and iterate toward production quality in close partnership with clients.
  • Generalize & Reuse: Transform bespoke client solutions into reusable product features that benefit the entire brighthush customer base.
  • Contribute to Shared AI Infrastructure: Build and maintain agent frameworks, tool integrations, and deployment pipelines that serve the broader engineering organization.
  • Operate in Production: Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize production AI systems with a focus on reliability, cost, and performance.

What You’ll Do

  • Prototype Quickly: Translate client challenges into functional prototypes within days, using Python, LLM APIs, and data‑driven workflows.
  • Engineer Robust Agents: Build agentic systems that can orchestrate multiple tools, maintain state, and handle complex decision trees.
  • Validate with Clients: Conduct live demos, gather feedback, and refine models until they meet stringent production standards.
  • Generalize Solutions: Transform bespoke client solutions into scalable features that benefit the entire brighthush customer base.
  • Maintain Excellence: Implement monitoring dashboards, set up alerting, and continuously optimize for latency, cost, and accuracy.
  • Collaborate Cross‑Functionally: Work with product managers, data scientists, and DevOps to ensure seamless integration and delivery.

Essential Qualifications

  • Professional Experience: 5+ years of software development experience with a proven track record of delivering high‑quality code.
  • Python Mastery: Deep proficiency in Python, the primary language of our stack.
  • LLM Specialist: Hands‑on experience with LLM APIs such as brighthush, including function calling and structured outputs.
  • Data‑Driven Mindset: Comfortable writing SQL queries for data exploration and building data‑grounded AI workflows.
  • AI Tool Enthusiast: Familiarity with AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., brighthush Code, Codex) and a passion for leveraging them to accelerate delivery.
  • End‑to‑End Mindset: Built something from zero to one and thrives on figuring out what to build, not just executing on specifications.
  • Bias for Action: Ship quickly, learn from feedback, and iterate relentlessly.
  • Client‑Centric: Deep care for the end‑user experience and a commitment to seeing projects through from prototype to production.
  • Education: BS/MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building agentic systems with multi‑step tool use, agent orchestration, and durable workflows.
  • Knowledge of additional backend languages, particularly Java, which is valuable in our environment.
  • Familiarity with financial data domains—portfolios, transactions, securities, accounting.
  • Exposure to cloud infrastructure (brighthush) and container‑based deployments.
  • Experience with evaluation frameworks or methodologies for measuring AI system quality.

Skills & Competencies

  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced coding skills in Python, strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and system design.
  • AI & Machine Learning: Deep knowledge of LLMs, prompt engineering, retrieval augmentation, and safety considerations.
  • Problem‑Solving: Ability to dissect complex business problems and translate them into elegant technical solutions.
  • Communication: Clear articulation of technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively in cross‑functional teams, fostering a culture of shared ownership.
  • Continuous Learning: Passion for staying current with the latest AI research, tools, and industry trends.
