Role Overview

As a Senior Staff SDET at brighthush, you will own the quality architecture and engineering strategy for our most critical systems. You will lead the design, implementation, and evolution of AI‑driven testing frameworks that empower our engineering teams to ship high‑quality software faster and more reliably. This is a hands‑on, senior technical leadership role that spans multiple product lines and has a direct impact on the customer experience.

Why This Role Is Different

  • AI at the Core – You will define how we use large language models (LLMs) and autonomous agents for test generation, failure triage, self‑healing, and release decisioning. Your guardrails will ensure that AI is trustworthy, auditable, and aligned with our safety standards.
  • Testing AI, Not Just Using It – Our AI‑powered product features require evaluation harnesses, golden datasets, and probabilistic assertions. You will pioneer methods to test systems that produce non‑deterministic outputs, a frontier with little existing playbook.
  • Real Autonomy & Scope – You will set the technical direction for quality engineering from scratch, rather than inheriting legacy strategies. Your decisions will shape the future of testing at brighthush.

Key Responsibilities

Own Quality Architecture & Strategy

  • Define and evolve the long‑term quality strategy that aligns with business and product goals.
  • Design shared quality platforms, automation frameworks, and test infrastructure adopted across multiple teams.
  • Establish scalable quality patterns and guardrails that eliminate duplicated, brittle, or low‑signal testing.
  • Anticipate systemic quality and reliability risks, driving preventative architectural solutions before they impact customers.
  • Set the standard for what “great” quality engineering looks like at scale.

Lead AI‑Driven Testing Strategy

  • Define and execute a strategy for AI‑assisted testing, including autonomous test generation, intelligent test selection, agent‑based failure triage, and self‑healing automation.
  • Build guardrails that make AI‑driven testing trustworthy, distinguishing between real regressions and harmless implementation drift.
  • Orchestrate AI agents within the CI/CD pipeline to translate raw test signals into actionable release confidence.
  • Own quality for AI‑powered product features—design evaluation suites, golden datasets, LLM‑as‑judge scorers, and statistical approaches for non‑deterministic behavior.
  • Validate AI‑generated application code for behavioral correctness, not just syntactic plausibility.
  • Evaluate emerging AI testing tooling with rigorous, honest assessment.

Raise the Bar Operationally & Across the Team

  • Lead the operational maturity of quality systems—define metrics, dashboards, and release confidence indicators.
  • Produce exemplary technical artifacts—quality architecture documents, automation frameworks, test platforms—that set the bar for the entire organization.
  • Serve as the accountable technical leader for strategic initiatives, proactively managing reliability, scalability, and technical debt.
  • Mentor senior SDETs, quality engineers, and other senior leaders, fostering AI fluency and best practices.
  • Establish hiring standards, coaching, and talent development pipelines.
  • Champion customer‑centric quality decisions, ensuring technical trade‑offs reflect real user needs.
  • Partner with Engineering and Product leadership to embed scalability and resilience into roadmap planning.

Essential Qualifications

  • 10+ years of hands‑on experience in quality engineering or SDET roles, including architecting quality strategy and automation platforms across multiple teams.
  • Proven track record designing and scaling test automation frameworks across the full stack—frontend web, mobile, and backend/API (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Appium, Postman).
  • Deep proficiency in one or more programming languages (JavaScript, TypeScript, Kotlin) used to build production‑grade automation tooling.
  • Hands‑on experience applying AI to testing—LLM‑assisted test generation, agent‑based workflows, intelligent test selection, or self‑healing automation.
  • Demonstrated ability to define quality architecture and standards that scale across many teams.
  • Strong grasp of modern development and delivery practices (agile/lean, DevOps, shift‑left testing, TDD) and experience embedding quality gates into CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Jenkins).
  • Experience mentoring and developing senior quality engineers and technical leaders, raising the technical bar across the organization.
  • History of leading post‑incident and root‑cause analysis that drives architectural and process change.
  • Excellent judgment on trade‑offs between short‑term delivery and long‑term system resilience.
  • Strong executive communication skills, influencing engineering and product leadership on quality strategy, risk, and investment.
  • Experience with performance and load testing at scale.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with LLM observability and evaluation tooling (e.g., Braintrust, Arize, MLflow, LangSmith).
  • Experience with cloud‑based testing platforms (AWS Device Farm, Sauce Labs, BrowserStack).
  • Background in e‑commerce or healthcare platforms and quality‑at‑scale practices in regulated environments.
  • Experience with internationalization and localization testing.
  • Track record building quality engineering communities of practice—tech talks, katas, lunch‑and‑learns.
  • Published writing, talks, or open‑source work on modern testing practice or AI in quality engineering.
  • Experience building evaluation or testing infrastructure for LLM‑based or ML‑driven product features.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strategic thinking and architectural vision.
  • Advanced programming and automation expertise.
  • Deep understanding of AI/ML concepts and their application to testing.
  • Data‑driven decision making and statistical analysis.
  • Exceptional communication—technical and executive.
  • Leadership and mentorship across distributed teams.
  • Continuous learning mindset—staying ahead of testing and AI trends.
